Welcome to the fourth installment of Quake, Life, and the meaning of the Universe. Not too long ago I realized that I've been doing this for three whole months already. Man. There's got to be more. - Time Traveler
08/07/1997: Due to the recent moving of the corporate offices from La Palma to Burbank, and due to the lack of an internet connection at the new site, it has been difficult to get an update, er, updated.
A lot of new events have occurred lately. Of course, the corporate relocation would be one of them. Also worth noting, Thresh took Time off of his schedule and stopped by Slam.Site Burbank yesterday. Today was the last day to play against him at Siggraph to try and win ca$h and prizes. Reptile told me that as of yesterday, Kornelia of Clan 311 has done the best so far. An omen of things to come, perhaps.
08/08/1997: I was informed by Ignatu of ClanRing that the winner of the beat Thresh at Siggraph competition was none other than Da5id of Clan Postal. As you may already know, Da5id is the main man responsible for the Slam.Site web page. He takes home 2k in money. And in second place is Club, also of Postal. Apparently their two efforts against Thresh were equal and so they had to participate in a tie breaker which Da5id barely won. A hearty congratulations to both of these Quakers. There is also a matter of third place. Kornelia of Clan 311. There are no "sure things" in competition, but from where I'm sitting and typing, Kornelia's chances in the All Female Quake Tournament look pretty darn good.
08/10/1997: A quick update. Unholy of the clan formerly known as Xtreme Prejudice (Well, they still are, but read about the current shakeups on their homepage) also won 500 bucks and some hardware in the Siggraph Thresh challenge. Congrats, man.
08/20/1997: Attended the Virtual Conventions LAN Party this last Saturday. Also in attendance were Reptile and Jarlaxle of Clan Postal. They held several tournaments for various popular games (Descent 2, Red Alert, Quake, etc.) with first and second receiving prizes. Read about the Quake tourney here.
It seems that Kornelia has been eliminated from the AFT. I found it hard to believe so I downloaded the demo and watched it for myself. The score was 5 to 1 in Kornelia's favor with less than 4 minutes to go. So what the heck happened? I could point out any number of things. The fact that Sapphira's pings were in the twenties (Actually, 19 and 27). For those who don't have a clue, you can only get those kinds of pings when you're on the same LAN as the server. Kornelia was listed as being on an ISDN line (67 and 95). She was killed 9 Times in less than 4 minutes, in a match where 16 minutes produced 7 frags. Respawn frags a-plenty. The sudden scoring must have been unnerving, because Kornelia lost 4 frags in that Time span. The sudden shift in the tempo of the match was very striking. For a moment, it was like shifting into a weird alternate universe, where Jeopardy comes on at 7:30 instead of 7. Or better yet, the whole thing can best be described as being yet another example of the "Dewey defeats Truman" idea. Don't count your chickens...
In any case, the final 8 have been determined. Only Killcreek remains from my original "favorites" picks, which goes to show just how little I know about the female competitors. Good luck to all of them and I'll see them in less than two weeks. Yee-haw.
